Welcome to HPNC’s new guest blog series! I am a long time resident of Hyde Park, a Mother of 3 sons, grandmother of twin grandsons, a recently retired lawyer, and a new volunteer of the legendary Hyde Park Neighborhood Club. In full disclosure, I did not know much about the club when I was raising my boys, and therefore, never engaged in its programs. Having now attended its recent galas, met the director and some of the staff, gone on a hard hat tour of the ongoing construction, and learned about both the history of the club, as well as the vision for the future when all the upgrades are completed, I’m very excited to be even a small part of this venture by offering some blog posts that will hopefully be of interest to the community.

Hyde Park has many iconic institutions - the University of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry, the DuSable Black History Museum, just to name a few. But for those who’ve raised kids on the south side of Chicago, it’s HPNC, quietly nestled in the neighborhood, that has provided a welcoming place for children and families to engage in exciting programs with others from many different walks of life. Of course, the building never had the majesty that drew the eye like some of the architectural gems that mark the neighborhood, and one could easily pass it on the street without taking particular note. But for those who’ve enjoyed its offerings for decades, it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

But something’s been happening here these days, with construction crews working to transform the space into a modern, welcoming and sustainable hub befitting this legendary cultural institution as it moves forward toward a very exciting future.

So, what’s exactly happening? So many things but here’s a teaser for anyone who’s had to wait outside when arriving early for a program or be cramped into the very small entryway because there wasn’t a place to wait or just hang out. Now picture this: 1200 square feet of lounging space with cosy seating areas where visitors can do homework while you wait for a class, meet up with friends, make new friends or just relax before and after programs.

And something really amazing is coming for those of us who love cooking. There’s going to be an area devoted to garden to table culinary cooking classes. Students and families will have the opportunity to learn how to prepare nutritious meals using fresh produce grown right on site in HPNC’s own garden. It’s a hands-on experience that blends environmental education with creativity, wellness, and fun. And these are just two of the improvements that are part of phase 1 of the ambitious project that will turn HPNC into a state of the art facility to be enjoyed by current and future generations.

Phase 2 will have additional exciting features, including a really cool loft space for teens to socialize, collaborate, and explore their interests in a space of their own. Every step of this transformation is rooted in sustainability. From eco-friendly materials to energy-efficient systems, the renovations reflect HPNC’s deep commitment to environmental responsibility and long-term stewardship.

This bold vision would not have been possible without the dedication of HPNC staff, board members and a committed group of community volunteers. Through a combination of government grants and generous private donations, they have worked tirelessly to bring this project to life, and fundraising efforts are still ongoing.

As the building evolves, HPNC’s mission remains the same: to be a trusted, inclusive space where families and young people from all backgrounds can learn, connect, and grow together.

Stay tuned for updates!
